The Power of Whole House Design

Christy M. Smith Interior Design

Side by side fireplace before and after remodel from western style to modern white oak

This Northwood Hills residence just outside Dallas began as a classic 1980s home defined by dark wood, heavy detailing, and a distinctly dated western influence. Through a comprehensive whole-house renovation, every surface was reconsidered and refined, from architectural details to finishes, including smoothing textured ceilings throughout the home.

A whole-home approach ensures every space works together visually and functionally. At Northwood Hills, the original design was thoughtfully updated with lighter materials and cleaner lines, resulting in a cohesive, timeless home with a calmer, more livable feel.

Before and after imagery highlights the transformation, showing how thoughtful planning and refined material choices can completely change the way a home looks, feels, and functions.

The Great Room

Once dominated by dark finishes and heavy architectural elements, the great room now feels open and balanced. Soaring ceilings with a diamond-pattern detail echo the custom millwork framing the fireplace, while natural oak tones, soft whites, and sculptural lighting bring warmth and quiet sophistication.

The Kitchen

Formerly enclosed and visually heavy, the kitchen was redesigned to feel seamless and inviting. Natural wood cabinetry, warm metals, and clean-lined inset details create a refined space designed for both daily living and entertaining.

The Primary Suite

What was once busy and dark, is now a tranquil retreat. Furniture placement and bathroom layouts were reconfigured to improve flow, livability, and natural light, while layered neutrals, custom built-ins, and considered lighting create a calm, comfortable space with lasting appeal.

The Exterior

The exterior transformation highlights how whole-house design extends beyond the interior. Updated landscaping, turf, architectural lighting, and the addition of an outdoor kitchen with lounge seating under a new pergola enhance the home’s presence while maintaining year-round practicality.

The Pool House

Designed as a relaxed extension of the main home, the pool house balances function with comfort. The dated black iron spiral staircase was replaced with a traditional stair for improved safety and a more timeless look. A full kitchen, lounge seating, and a soft palette make the space ideal for guests and consistent with the craftsmanship throughout the property.

A whole-house renovation creates harmony that cannot be achieved room by room. Northwood Hills is a clear example of how a unified design vision transforms a dated home into a timeless one.
